About me
My name is Thomas Smith and for many years I have had a penchant for artifacts crafted in various hardwoods. During my long career in Financial Services I found immense satisfaction and reward in my spare time by building timber objects for my home, family and friends. I am also an avid collector of modern and antique timepieces. Now, in retirement I spend much of my time pursuing my interests further and combining them by building high quality hand-crafted clock cases in my home-based workshop in Stockport, Cheshire.
My work
Most of the timber that I use for my clocks is recycled from hardwood furniture or other wooden household items that might otherwise be disposed of. On the occasions when I find it necessary to buy timber from a wood yard I ensure that it comes from a sustainable source. My personal preference is Oak which lends itself perfectly to both contemporary or traditional designs. It is also such a pleasure to work with compared to other, softer timbers. Other hardwoods are also often used subject to their cost and availability.
Generally the clocks that I build contain good quality battery driven quartz movements. These of course are well known for their reliability and accuracy. However, to fulfill my special interest in vintage and antique clocks, I might use mechanical movements which have been salvaged from old clock cases that might already have been discarded by the previous owners. I will strip these movements down, repair or replace any damaged or worn parts, clean and lubricate them, then reassemble them. If after testing them, and I am happy that the movements are reliable and keep good time, I love to design and build timber cases for them.
Essentially my work is focused around building bespoke and unique clocks that can be made to order so as to complement both traditional and modern home environments. Some of the clock faces can be personalised in various styles and colours, perhaps also with personal messages printed on the dial.
The lead times for bespoke items, from when the customer places an order, to delivery, are dependent on the availability of materials and the complexity of the design. Generally though they are no longer than four weeks. I also have a good stock of “off the shelf” clocks for sale, perfect for gifting at short notice. Each of my clocks is a unique creation so please allow for slight variances in shape and colour.
